Negative VAT results: offset or ask for a refund
How NaPa carries amounts to offset from one quarter to the next, when they expire, and the fourth-quarter choice.
When a quarter comes out negative (you paid more VAT than you charged), the amount is left to offset in the following quarters. NaPa carries it forward by itself:
- Each quarter shows the amounts to offset from earlier periods (box 110), what it offsets now (78), always as much as possible and oldest first, and what's left (87).
- Each amount expires after four years. NaPa shows its date and flags it with Expires soon in its last year.
The fourth quarter
Only the fourth quarter lets you ask for a refund. If it comes out negative, when you mark it as reviewed NaPa asks whether you want to Ask for a refund or Offset later.
Amounts from before NaPa
If you bring amounts pending from returns filed before using NaPa, enter them in Amounts to offset from before NaPa, in Taxes, with the quarter of each one. They can be changed until the first quarter is closed in NaPa.
